New
Jersey SCC Elementary School No. 5
East Orange, New Jersey
Contract No. ES-0018-Z01 |
|
Chu
& Gassman is responsible for the design and
commissioning of the HVAC, Electrical Power
Distribution, Lighting, Fire Protection, and
Plumbing systems for a new Elementary School
in East Orange New Jersey. This new school
is to accommodate 567 students from Pre-Kindergarten
through the 5th Grade. The three (3) story,
81,470 sq. ft. facility will feature Science,
Computer, Writing and Speaking Laboratories,
Art and Music rooms, Cafeteria, Auditorium,
and a Gymnasium.
The HVAC design incorporates high efficiency
modular condensing boilers to provide hot
water for building heating systems while operating
at peak efficiency at part load conditions.
The buildings heating system consists of perimeter
hot water fin tubes, hot water coils in roof
mounted air handling units, and unit heaters
in the gymnasium.
In order to take advantage of clean burning
natural gas in the summer and minimize the
use of electricity during peak demand times,
the building's air conditioning system consists
of a direct fired absorption chiller plant
to provide cooling water to the roof mounted
air handling units. Fans and pumps utilize
the flexibility of variable frequency drives
to further increase the energy performance
of the building. The building is designed
to be 100% CFC free with small ceiling mounted
air conditioning units located in the electrical
and computer rooms operating on green refrigerants.
All occupied areas are provided with variable
air volume systems in order to provide greater
control for occupant comfort in the building.
In conjunction, the ventilation system is
designed to provide superior indoor air quality
during and after construction.
Lighting design throughout the building complies
with or exceeds the ASHRAE 90.1 standard required
Lighting Power Densities. In addition, advanced
lighting controls were utilized throughout
the building in order to eliminate wasted
electricity in perimeter spaces that can utilize
natural day-lighting. Occupancy sensors have
been specified to further save energy in intermittently
occupied spaces, or in situations where occupants
have left the space with the lights on.
The plumbing design is in accordance with
the National Plumbing Code and International
Building Code to provide high efficiency and
the most economical facility. The plumbing
design incorporates low flow fixture units
and metering valves to reduce water consumption
and reduce the impact to the municipal waste
water treatment. The complete plumbing system
includes: gas, water supply, waste, roof drainage,
and fuel oil piping.
The fire protection system is designed in
accordance with the International Building
Code, local requirements and the NFPA related
code. The fire protection system includes:
sprinklers for the whole building, standpipes
in the stairways, a deluge system, fire pump,
and a chemical fire suppression.
Chu & Gassman also performed a building energy
simulation using VisualDOE 4.0. By constructing
these computer models, energy savings totaling
20% above the ASHRAE 90.1 Budget Building
Design will be realized following the commissioning
of the building.
Overall, the building facilities have been
developed to achieve a minimum of 26 LEED
credits and attain a LEED Certification from
the US Green Building Council. |
