plumbing design including storm water retention
facilities for the Adelphi Academy. Project
included the addition of six classrooms to
the existing school. Construction was phased
to have no impact upon existing school operations.
All construction work requiring an interruption
of existing building operations was scheduled
for the summer months when school was not
in session. Provisions in the electrical,
HVAC and plumbing design were provided for
a future addition of an auditorium-theater
to the school. |

Auditorium Modernization and

Chu
& Gassman provided electrical, HVAC and plumbing
design services in connection with the alteration
and rehabilitation of this private boy's preparatory
school. Project included providing the mechanical
and electrical design for rehabilitation and
modernization of the main auditorium and reception
area. Since the school is a listed historical
building, extensive care was taken in the
addition of all the new HVAC systems and equipment.
In addition, fire alarm systems, handicapped
water fountain and sanitary facilities were
provided under separate contracts for the
entire school.
Review of the computer power conditioning
system was made to determine its adequacy
and conformance with present standards. |

This
school is a 74,000 square foot, 3-story building
with a basement auditorium. Design will include
a new emergency lighting system consisting
of two new emergency panelboards connected
upstream of the main switch. Modifications
to the school's lighting system included:
- All new A/C battery pack emergency lighting
units and exit signs in all areas of assembly.
- Existing passageway and stairway lighting
separated from general lighting and connected
to new emergency panelboards.
- Existing incandescent fixtures replaced
with new fluorescent fixtures in 23 classrooms.
- Existing fixtures replaced with 250W metal
halide fixtures in playroom, gymnasium and
lobby area. |

or provide new service connections to and
from the street.
Phase II - Design/Filing/Bid Documents
Produce Plumbing and Electrical Bid Drawings
and Specifications detailing the requirements
for serving new transportable classroom units
(TCUs) with wastewater, cold water and electrical
service, based on the recommendations of Phase
I.
Phase III - Construction Administration
Oversee construction (installation and placement)
of TCUs, review shop drawings, and provide
technical consultation during construction
to resolve issues pertaining to Plumbing and
Electrical Services. |

Turnkey, Design-Build Contract to completely
renovate an abandoned retail space, previously
used by "Caldor". Space to be converted into
useable school space.
Chu & Gassman produced detailed design standards
and technical specifications for turnkey bidding,
based on New York City School Construction
Authority (NYC SCA) standards for HVAC, Electrical
and Plumbing Contracts.
Feasibility Reports for Transportable and
Temporary Classrooms
Chu & Gassman has surveyed over 100 NYC (Brooklyn,
Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan) schools to determine
the feasibility of providing one or more Transportable
Classroom Units (TCU) or Temporary Classroom
Buildings (TCB) on the site. Specifically,
Chu & Gassman determined the availability
of the following items:
- On-site and off-site electrical power sources.
- On-site and off-site sewer systems for waste
piping connection.
- On-site cold water supply.
- Location and condition of existing Public
Address system.
- Location and condition of existing Fire
Alarm system.
Chu & Gassman produced reports summarizing
their findings and recommendations for each
item for each school.
Conditions Assessment Reports and Detailed
Design Documents for Bidding
Chu & Gassman surveyed several NYC schools
to perform the following tasks:
- Assess existing conditions of various systems
such as boiler plants, air conditioning, room
lighting, emergency and exit lighting, stage
lighting, intrusion alarm and fire alarm.
- Establish appropriate scope of work for
each system.
- Produce detailed design documents for bidding
the work. |
