Chu
& Gassman is responsible for electrical and
mechanical design for the rehabilitation of
this terminal, which includes new entry pavilion,
new LIRR employee facility, new concourse,
rehabilitated platforms with architectural
ceilings and advertising kiosks that also
house telephones, fire valve cabinets and
passenger assist telephones.
Additionally, the terminal is being provided
with a new MTA police facility with a desk/reception
area, holding cells, locker facilities, toilets,
showers, lounge, kitchen area and administrative
offices. Special feature includes a dedicated
telephone system, security system including
CCTV/assess control, police antennas/radio
system, computer system, etc.
Mechanical and electrical systems include
a platform tempered air system using a gas
absorption chiller and platform "cooling kiosks",
a 600,000 cfm platform ventilation system
with fire department purge panel, HVAC systems
for all areas throughout the terminal, new
telephone closet/communications room/LAN room/information
services room/water meter room/gas meter room,
and electrical distribution room.
A new 4000 amp, 480 volt electrical service
with a 350 kW gas generator backup and a new
1600 amp, 480 volt electrical service were
provided for the LIRR Terminal, Police Facility
and platform ventilation system. |

Chu
& Gassman provided Electrical, Mechanical
and Communications Design for subway station
complex consisting of underground Concourse
IND Station and elevated Jerome Avenue IRT
Station; these two stations comprise the 161st
Street IND/IRT Complex. This station was opened
in 1933 and is a major transfer point in the
Bronx. The elevated Jerome Avenue No. 4 train
connects here with underground IND train as
well as Surface Bus BX55. The following were
incorporated in the design:
- Coordination with the State Historic Preservation
Office (SHPO).
- Rehabilitation of all existing station elements
to achieve a State of Good Repair in compliance
with latest (1955) TA Standards.
- Reorganization and reallocation of existing
TA rooms and facilities throughout the station
complex.
- Incorporation of ADA requirements including
the provision of five (5) elevators throughout
both stations and replacement of two (2) existing
escalators.
- New fire standpipe system and escalator
automatic sprinkler systems.
- Complete rehabilitation of the drainage
system.
- Sewage Lift Station.
- New ADA compliance public toilets.
- Upgrade of station lighting and power distribution
system.
- Complete routing and installation for the
addition and relocation of fiber optic signal
and communications cables.
- Upgrade of public address system, public
telephones, system telephones, emergency equipment,
radio equipment, closed circuit television,
etc. |

& Gassman provided electrical, HVAC, and plumbing
design and shop drawing review for complete
station rehabilitation: new lighting and electrical
power, new ventilating and plumbing systems.
Our mechanical and electrical engineers worked
directly with NYCT Station Design staff on
the following stations:
Christopher Street IRT
Nevins Street IRT
Broadway/Lafayette IND
Fulton Street BMT
We also made a drainpipe and conduit study
to determine existing conditions and design
solutions for:
Canal Street BMT
All contract drawings for the various assignments
were prepared in AutoCAD.
In addition, we developed a standard specification
for station rehabilitation for electrical,
mechanical and instrumentation disciplines.

communication, fire protection, HVAC, and
plumbing design and shop drawing review. Requirements
of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
are incorporated in the design and in this
regard Chu & Gassman is responsible for the
design of elevators where required. The railroad
stations are:
Raritan Valley Line (Three Stations):
Fanwood, Netherwood, Westfield
New Jersey Coast Line (Nine Stations):
Bradley Beach, Matawan, Elberon, Middletown,
Hazlet, Perth Amboy,
Little Silver, Red Bank, South Amboy
The Perth Amboy, Red Bank, Little Silver,
Fanwood and Netherwood stations are on the
State and National Register for Historic Places.
Middletown Station, although not a historic
structure, is located in the Middletown Historic
District. Special design attention was applied
to preserve the historical features where
there are penetrations by ducts, louvers,
piping and conduits. |

The
East New York Depot and Shops, the largest
facility of its kind in New York City, repair
over 2,000 buses yearly. Chu & Gassman prepared
the mechanical portion of the conceptual report
and final design drawings and specifications.
Scope of Work included:
- Extensive revisions to the building's HVAC
system to improve the depot's ventilation
during the morning start-up of the bus fleet.
- Study of and modifications to the ventilation
system in the Paint Shop $ Air compressor
systems
- Fueling and hoisting systems
- New bus washers
- Engine washing facilities using a non-hazardous,
high-pressure water system (instead of the
standard methyl chlorine system)
- Extensive modifications to the fire protection
system's piping and equipment.
After timely completion of the design, the
contract bids were within the $19 million
budget estimate. |

& Gassman provided the HVAC, Plumbing and
Electrical design and shop drawing review
for the relocation of existing and operating
PATH Police Station. Particular care was taken
in providing for the relocation and reactivation
of the police communications and CCTV systems.
Project included a police desk/reception area,
holding cells, locker facilities, toilets,
showers, lounge, kitchen area and administrative
office areas. A newly relocated police facility
for the Port Authority include a police desk/reception
area, holding cells, locker facilities, toilets,
showers, lounge, kitchen area and administrative
office areas.
HVAC design included removal of the existing
HVAC system, which served the space and air
conditioning for the locker area with 100%
outside air. Administration areas have been
provided with an additional air conditioning
unit. Heating and cooling was provided by
interfacing with the existing hot water and
chilled water piping to the air conditioning
units.
Communications and surveillance system interface.
Concurrent operation of both new and old stations
was provided. |
